  5. It helps calm anxiety and panic. When we write down what we are feeling, we are validating our emotions while also releasing them. Journaling can, therefore, give you comfort in stressful situations.
  6. Improvement in lifestyle: Journaling helps us identify areas where there is potential to improve and also helps us break patterns that we tend to fall into.
  7. Helps balance mood: When we are feeling blue or when we feel negative emotions very strongly, journaling can help by acting as a medium for releasing negativity.

What can self-journaling help us address?

  • Past experiences: Journaling is an effective way to analyze past experiences that we have maybe not fully gotten over. It also helps us approach similar future experiences in a more effective way.
  • Emotional triggers: When we maintain a self-reflection journal religiously, over time we are able to recognize specific situations or factors in our environment that cause us mental or emotional stress.
  • Feelings and emotions: Journaling helps us address both positive as well as negative emotions. “Feel it all, then let it go.” Journaling helps us do exactly that. When we journal about what we feel, not only are we processing these feelings, but we are also releasing them.
  • Negative thoughts: Self-reflection journaling can help us identify the root cause of our negativity and such thoughts. Dumping all your thoughts on a page in your self-reflection journal can help you clear all these thoughts from your head. Sometimes, our fears and worries seem silly when we read them out loud.
  • Mental health: Journaling helps you take control over what you are feeling. When we consciously choose to process systematically what we are going through, it can do wonders for our mental health.

How do we decide what to journal?

With self-reflection journaling, we get to pick and choose what to journal about and specifically address. You can start by simply talking about your day and breaking it down into bits that you want to work on. Or you can pick something that happened to you in the past that you feel you have not fully processed.

Let us take a look at journal prompts that we can use to make journaling a part of our everyday routine:

  2. What are your biggest distractions?
  3. What are your non-negotiable beliefs or values?
  4. What does your dream of reality look like?
  5. When, where, and with whom do you feel the most triggered?
  6. What is comfort for you?
  7. What are some things that make you feel instantly better?

These are general prompts that we can use on an everyday basis without much thought or effort. However, once we start working on ourselves with the help of self-reflection journal prompts, we may feel the need to delve into deeper issues, which will require situation-specific journaling.

These journal prompts for deeper self-reflection may look like:

  1. What is your most traumatic experience, and how do you think it has affected you?
  2. What is something about your childhood that you cherish?
  3. Describe one or two significant life events that helped shape you into who you are today.
  4. What are your biggest regrets, and why?
  5. Who is the most reliable person in your life?
  6. How do you want to be perceived?
  7. What do you think of yourself as a person? What are your qualities and core values?

These journal prompts direct our thoughts towards a determined purpose and help organize them, such that we are able to form a clear understanding of our habits and behavior patterns.

When we are able to articulate our thoughts in a simple and directed manner, it helps us introspect deeply and know ourselves better.

We can also use self-reflection journaling to help us become the best version of ourselves.

  1. What does the best version of you look like? What are their habits?
  2. What is one major change you will have to make to achieve your dream life?
  3. What are some habits you want yourself to have?
  4. Name 5 things that you are the best at, 4 things you need improvement in, and 3 things you would like to learn.

Self-reflection journaling is a very versatile tool that we can use to our benefit. It is one of the best tools, and not only is it effective, it can be used in a number of ways depending on personal requirements.

Studies show that journaling about stressful events can help you make sense of what occurred and effectively heal. It can also help with personal positive evolution.

Self-reflection journaling may be mainly about writing down what you are going through, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. Under the surface, it is also a journey of self-discovery and self-improvement that helps us navigate the depths of mental health.

Journaling is therapeutic, not therapy. Write your way through, and work your way through!
